Yercaud is easy to describe: a beautiful hill station with a lake, coffee plantations, viewpoints, waterfalls and a cave temple. The History of Yercaud: From Ancient Hills to a Colonial Hill Stationย
But descriptions don't explain why certain places in Yercaud stay in people's memories for generations.
Why is it called Lady's Seat?
Why are there mysterious stone structures at Pagoda Point?
Why is the most important temple in Yercaud hidden inside a cave?
Is there really a link between a small cave near a colonial bungalow and the temple on the highest point of the hills?
And how does a waterfall appear to come from a lake sitting high above the valley?
This guide goes beyond the usual list of Yercaud tourist places. For each of the best places to visit in Yercaud, you'll find the fact, story or local legend that makes it worth knowing, and how far it is from Ishank Resorts, a quiet family resort in the Asambur hills, so you can plan your day around where you're staying.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about 3 kmHomeย
For most visitors, Yercaud begins at the lake. It sits at the centre of town, surrounded by gardens, walking areas and the boat house. Boating is one of the most popular things to do in Yercaud, making it an easy first stop for families and first-time visitors.
The fact: The name Yercaud is commonly understood to come from the Tamil words yeri (lake) and kaadu (forest). Lake plus forest, which is a remarkably good description of the landscape.
Why visit: Go early for a quieter experience. Take a boat ride, walk around the lake and explore the gardens nearby. For families, it's one of the easiest places to start a Yercaud sightseeing day.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about 4.1 km (Gent's Seat: about 3.7 km)
Lady's Seat is one of Yercaud's most famous viewpoints. From the rocky lookout, the hills fall away towards the plains, with the winding ghat road visible below.
The story: The Salem District administration records the local explanation that a white English lady reportedly spent her evenings on the natural rock formation, enjoying the view. Her identity isn't reliably documented, which is part of the charm. Somewhere in Yercaud's colonial hill-station days, an unnamed visitor found the perfect seat in the landscape, and the name stayed.
Nearby: Lady's Seat is part of a small cluster with Gent's Seat and Children's Seat, so you can see several viewpoints in one outing.
Best time to visit: Late afternoon towards sunset, if the weather is clear. Mist can be just as beautiful.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about 4.3 km (roughly 20 minutes on the hill road)
On the eastern side of the Yercaud hills lies one of the destination's most recognisable viewpoints, also called Pyramid Point. It offers wide views towards Attur and Ayothiapattinam.
The curiosity: The name comes from the pyramid-like piles of stones found here. Some accounts link them to local hill communities, while others simply describe them as old structures whose original purpose isn't clearly documented. Their exact origin remains part of the mystery.
The experience: The real attraction is the view over the plains. Pagoda Point is especially rewarding around sunrise and in the softer light of late afternoon.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about 8 km (roughly 16-20 minutes)
This is one of the places that makes Yercaud unlike an ordinary hill station. The Shevaroyan Temple (also written Servarayan or Shevarayan) is a cave shrine associated with Lord Shevaroyan and Goddess Kaveri, at the highest part of the Shevaroy Hills.
The fact: Instead of a large temple complex, visitors enter a small natural cave to reach the shrine. The Salem District administration describes it as a cave temple, and its May festival draws thousands of tribal people from the surrounding hills.
The legend: Local traditions speak of the cave extending deep beneath the hills and connecting with the Cauvery. These stories belong to local belief rather than established geology, but they add another layer to the visit. There is something fitting in it: at the highest point of the range, the principal shrine is inside the mountain.
Why visit: Even if you're not visiting for religious reasons, the temple offers a glimpse of the older cultural landscape of the Shevaroy Hills.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about 4.7 km
Kiliyur Falls is one of Yercaud's most dramatic natural attractions. It is about 3 km from Yercaud Lake and fed by surplus water from the lake and other parts of the Shevaroy Hills, dropping roughly 90 m (about 300 feet) into the valley.
Why the season matters: After good rain, it can become a dramatic cascade. In dry periods it can be much less impressive. Yercaud is a weather-dependent destination, and Kiliyur is the perfect example.
Important: The parking point is a short drive away, followed by a trek of about 2 km that can be strenuous and slippery after rain. Check local conditions before attempting it.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: on the road towards Shevaroyan Temple (about 8 km), so easy to combine with your temple visit
Bear's Cave is associated with the area around the historic Norton Bungalow, on the road towards the Shevaroyan Temple.
The local legend: Local belief, recorded in district tourism material, holds that the cave is partly below ground and has a deeper passage leading towards the cave at the Shevaroyan Temple. Is there actually a secret route connecting the two? That's another question. What matters is that the belief exists, and it's the kind of story that makes exploring Yercaud more memorable than photographing and moving on.
Why visit: It works well as part of a longer drive through the plantations and older parts of Yercaud.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about a 10-minute drive
Yercaud's Botanical Garden, maintained by the Botanical Survey of India, is not simply a garden.
The fact: Within the grounds is a feature known as Bell Rock. According to the Salem District administration, striking it with a stone produces a bell-like sound. A rock that rings sounds like folklore, but this one is documented by district tourism.
What else to see: The garden is worthwhile for anyone interested in Yercaud's plant life and biodiversity, including its orchid collection. It's a more curated way to understand the green world of forests, plantations, coffee and fruit cultivation that defines Yercaud.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about 3 km (roughly 6 minutes)
Beside Yercaud Lake, Anna Park is one of the easiest attractions to combine with a lake visit, and it becomes special during the annual Yercaud Summer Festival.
The fact: The famous flower show is held here, and the festival has also included dog shows, boat races and cultural programmes. At festival time the park looks dramatically different, with large floral displays celebrating the horticultural character of the hills. Yercaud's horticulture is more than decoration, since the surrounding hills are an agricultural landscape of coffee, fruit and spices.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: the Loop Road runs through the Asambur area where the resort sits, so you can start from the property
This isn't a single monument, which is why it belongs on the list. The Loop Road takes you away from the tourist centre and into another side of Yercaud: coffee plantations, small settlements, forest, old roads and views.
The fact: Coffee is a major part of Yercaud's identity, and the plantation economy shaped the modern hill station. Research from the French Institute of Pondicherry examines Yercaud's transformation from a colonial plantation landscape to a modern tourism destination.
Our recommendation: Don't treat the Loop Road as something to "complete." Slow down, stop where it's safe, and look around. This is a place where the road is the attraction.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: Rose Garden about 3.4 km
Yercaud's attractions aren't all viewpoints. At the Silk Farm, visitors can learn about mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing and silk production. The nearby Rose Garden adds a horticultural dimension.
The interesting fact: A holiday in Yercaud can take you through forest, coffee plantation, fruit cultivation, silk production and flower cultivation without leaving the hills. The hills are a working landscape, not just scenery.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about an 18-minute drive
If you're travelling with children, Yercaud has increasingly moved beyond traditional sightseeing. Peeku Park is designed around interactive experiences with birds and animals, including feeding activities, making it especially suited to younger children.
Unlike the classic attractions, which are about looking at the landscape, places like Peeku Park are about interacting with it. It also sits on the way to Pagoda Point, so the two combine easily.
๐ From Ishank Resorts: about a 15-minute drive
Sky Park is a large entertainment and adventure destination with attractions for families, teenagers and adventure seekers, a very different experience from the traditional sightseeing circuit.
Yercaud isn't frozen in time. The hill station that once revolved around plantations and colonial retreats now has traditional attractions and modern family entertainment side by side. You can visit a centuries-old cultural landscape in the morning and look for adventure in the afternoon.
If you only have one day, don't try to visit everything. Choose by the kind of holiday you want.
First-time visitors: Anna Park โ Yercaud Lake โ Lady's Seat โ Pagoda Point. The classic Yercaud experience, mostly within about 5 km of the resort.
Nature lovers: Loop Road โ coffee plantations โ Botanical Garden โ Kiliyur Falls. Allow more time and check waterfall conditions first.
Families with young children: Anna Park โ Yercaud Lake โ Peeku Park โ gardens โ a relaxed evening. Returning to the resort for an afternoon break (and a swim) is worth it.
History and culture: Shevaroyan Temple โ Bear's Cave โ Loop Road โ older plantation landscapes. This is the side many quick weekend itineraries miss.
Adventure-loving families and teenagers: Sky Park โ viewpoints โ Kiliyur Falls, if conditions permit.
Trying to see everything. Yercaud isn't a city where you tick off attractions every 30 minutes. Weather changes, traffic changes, mist changes the views and rain changes the waterfalls.
Instead of "We need to visit 12 places," plan "We want to discover three or four sides of Yercaud": one viewpoint, one cultural experience, one nature experience, one family experience, and plenty of time in between.
The magic of Yercaud isn't in one attraction but in the combination: a coffee plantation in the morning, mist on the road, a cave temple high in the hills, lunch after a viewpoint, children playing, a swim in the afternoon, the smell of wet earth after rain, a campfire after sunset, and the hills going quiet at night.
That's why, at Ishank Resorts, we don't think a stay in Yercaud should be just a room between sightseeing trips. Our family suites, pool, cafe and fire camp sit in the quiet Asambur hills, only minutes from the lake, parks and viewpoints above, with some of the cleanest air in the region.
